After much faffing this side of the pond thanks to the the terrible postal service - ASSUMPTIONS FINALLY ARRIVED! It's so incredibly exciting to actually hold a copy of this game. Online fashion and lifestyle magazine Kit Magazine commissioned me to create an illustration to accompany their Virgo horoscope feature. The brief was extremely open, they just asked for a "beautiful maiden".
They were also kind enough to interview me and share my work as part of their ongoing Illustrators Portfolio feature. I recently finished working with author Anna Hughes, on a series of maps which she wanted refreshed and updated for the second edition publication of her book 'Eat, Sleep, Cycle: A Bike Ride Around the Coast of Britain'. She requested that the maps look "like a drawing", rather than computerised/digitally created. The illustrations are based on sketches that she sent over as references. There are 5 maps in total, following her route around the coast of Britain.Lauren Bakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11967684437245515620noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2646145061793421057.post-56100357759833830002015-09-07T05:20:00.000-07:002015-09-07T05:20:31.960-07:00Data Zoo

Illustrations created for blogger Brett Robson.
Brett had a series of blog images that she wanted turned into graphics to use on t-shirts for her online shop. She provided the photographs and asked that they be turned into "stylised" illustrations, along with decorative wording. These are the results. Fashion illustration isn't something I often have the opportunity to work on, so this job was a delight!Lauren Bakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11967684437245515620noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2646145061793421057.post-71580364136747889212015-09-07T04:51:00.000-07:002015-09-07T04:51:47.651-07:00DJ P.Y.K

Bomi from DJ P.Y.K approached me as he was after a logo redesign. His ideas were quite well formed to begin with, he wanted elements from his old logo included (such as the broken record, the headphones, the ankh and the lettering), but also wanted a caricature portrait drawn in a cartoonish style with an attitude-filled expression (he sent plenty of references). He requested that the design was "bold, intricate and controversial" so that it drew people to it and made them want to find out more about his music and brand. I've had a little extra time over the last day or two so I made two illustrations inspired by the resourceful, funny and brilliant kids of Jurassic Park (apart from when Lex is hacking the park's door locking system and the velociraptors are trying to get into the room and Ellie is trying to reach the gun with her foot Tim you could've just passed her the gun dammit)

Last month saw me team up with economy-slaying-madman-artist Jamie Moakes and magical-word-wizard-editor Kelli Savill to DO A THING. We made a book together, guys! In a really tiny amount of time!

I've worked with both Jamie and Kelli before (although they're my close friends before co-workers) and working with them is an absolute bundle of joy and energy and late night pizza and seven-hour meetings (this happened twice in one week). I was lucky enough to be part of the design team that helped Jamie's show You Will Be Rare travel to Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2011 and he brought me back to help create a book of the show for the next installment of the You Will Be Rare adventure - a gallery show in Seattle. I was responsible for the design and illustration throughout, the result being a full-colour A5 paperback and posters for the gallery room, as well as promotional flyers.
Once I have a copy of the book I'll be sure to update with photos but for now here's a little preview from Jamie's Instagram page (which will give you a good idea of what the project is like):

Assumptions is probably one of my favourite projects I've ever had the pleasure of working on. It barely even felt like work. Tyler approached me with an idea so brilliant and so fun that I knew it was going to be a hoot.
I'll allow the official website to explain exactly what Assumptions is, but my role in the project was to create and illustrate 100 vastly different, individual and funny characters. A hugely successful Kickstarter campaign was run to help make the game a reality, and it's currently in it's production stages. I'll be sure to update again once I have an actual copy of the game! I am tremendously excited to receive it and I'm so happy to have been a part of the project. This is the final logo created for startup poetry publisher Green Bottle Press. I was commissioned by my faves Bookswarm, who I've worked with multiple times in the past. They were responsible for the overall brand design and web development, so I worked closely with them to create a logo that exactly suited the needs of our client.
Lauren Bakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11967684437245515620noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2646145061793421057.post-69790920063695703362015-06-29T11:00:00.000-07:002015-06-29T11:00:25.908-07:00DBZ

I've spent the last month or so working on two new illustrated children's books and although I tend to listen to music whilst I work, I've recently started rewatching Dragon Ball Z in the background. Cue all the childhood feels. This isn't anything other than a bit of art I had to get off my chest, but I liked it enough as a character piece to show you nice folks of the internet.
So much has happened since I last updated! I'll keep it short as I try to keep this blog as a space where my work can (hopefully) speak for itself.

So in January of this year I quit my full time job (I was a garment printer by day, illustrator by night, and working every hour under the sun because of it) to become completely self-employed and focus on forwarding my career as a designer and illustrator.

At the same time, my partner and I decided to embrace a different sort of change and made the decision to move from Essex to London.

Because of these two huge upheavals in my life, the first half of 2015 has been terrifying, stress-inducing, sleep-depriving, jolly good fun. At times I didn't think I was going to pull any of it off but I got there and here I am, living frugally but comfortably in our little flat in E16. I pay my bills by drawing pictures and I feel like 10-year old me would be pretty happy about this.

One of the first things I did when I became A Proper Freelance Person was open a little Etsy store. I only put a few prints up for sale but I've made over 50 sales in 6 months so I'm pleased as punch. My Jurassic Park inspired "Dinosaurs Eat Man, Woman Inherits The Earth" illustration has by far been the most popular, so I also opened a Society6 store to widen the range of merch it's available on.

So to wrap up, I guess this post is a thank you for everyone who's been so supportive of me the last few months, anyone who's bought a print or shirt, and anyone who enjoys looking at my drawings. Thanks for allowing me to do my dream job.

rebecca approached me requesting two custom portrait illustrations of her little girl. she wanted them to be themed around food and music, suggesting evelyn could be banging a drum in one and eating a cake in the other. she suggested the wording as well (both words/phrases that evelyn likes to use!) we tried a few different colour schemes but settled on the pink as they would look great side by side on the wall together.

i love working with each and every one of my clients, whether they're new or returning, i love the challenge that every little or large project brings. one of my favourite things is being approached for completely custom illustration work, which is what i was asked for in this instance. andy wanted a family portrait but with a difference: a huge piece depicting him and his family and their passions, including bike riding and horse riding, active within their home town (sunny colchester). i included little landmarks as well as illustrations of their family homes.

it was a big challenge for me as it was the first single illustration of this size i'd ever taken on (there's a reason i'm called tinysketchbook...) but a thoroughly enjoyable one.
Lauren Bakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11967684437245515620noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2646145061793421057.post-10756580477969927292014-12-19T13:57:00.000-08:002014-12-19T13:57:44.353-08:00paper plane films

although the majority of my work now ends up being a digital product, my heart still secretly lies with the handmade. every illustration i create starts out as a pencil drawing and so during the downtime when i am not creating for clients and want to create for myself, i have in recent months taken up painting to keep my handmade heart happy.

in an unexpected but wonderful little twist, whilst sharing these (and other) personal paintings on instagram, i have since been commissioned by various people to paint custom portraits. i am thrilled at this different path my illustration career is taking. another string to the bow, as my papa would say.
Lauren Bakerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11967684437245515620noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2646145061793421057.post-91057168720405919562014-08-31T09:50:00.000-07:002014-08-31T09:50:46.499-07:00women of sherlock
